Second semester 2009

The second semester of 2009 has been characterized by a intense activity in reviewing and updating of the guidelines in Canine Leishmaniasis that soon will be published in the prestigious Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association in three sections
as:

  • Canine leishmaniasis: guidelines for diagnosis and clinical classification
  • Canine leishmaniasis: guidelines for prevention
  • Canine leishmaniasis: guidelines for drug therapy.

The logo of the Canine Leishmaniasis Working Group (CLWG) in English has been approved

n the Veterinaria journal, volume # 4, August 2009, the guidelines about prevention of Canine Leishmaniasis has been published Leishmaniosi canina: linee guida su diagnosi, stadiazione, terapia, monitoraggio e prevenzione. Parte III: Prevenzione

Dr. Maroli, presented a speech whose title was “Strategic control of Leishmania vectors in urban areas” inside the scientific program of World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) congress that was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil from July 21st to 24th, where the activity of CLWG has been shown Strategic control of Leishmania vectors in urban areas.

In the autumn meeting of CLWG held in Rome in November 18th the activity of 2010 has been planned, that include the active participation in the scientific committee of the 2nd International Congress of Canine Leishmaniasis that will be held in Pisa in April 17th and 18th 2010. The scientific committee is including Prof. Lubas (chairman), Prof. Paltrinieri, Prof. Oliva, Dr. Maroli, and Dr. Zini. Moreover, several CLWG members will be involved in the congress as speakers Programma preliminare II Congresso Internazionale sulla Leishmaniosi Canina di Pisa

In the same occasion the CLWG decided to overview the preparation of a multi-author book in Canine Leishmaniasis prepared by EV-SCIVAC, distributed by Hill’s Nutrition Company, Inc., inside the annual prevention coverage. This book will include the extension of both the information and illustrations items presented by the speakers in the International Congress in Canine Leishmaniasis of Pisa.

inally, Dr. Zatelli after four years of intense activity as chairman of the CLWG decided to retire his position for personal reasons. The chairman position has been covered, by election among the CLWG members, from Prof. Lubas, that will be in charge for a tri-annual period from November 2009 up to November 2012

The CLWG has prepared a four-pages folder for a thorough spread by practitioners of its own guidelines that briefly summarized them. The first version has been prepared in Italian and in 2010 will be arranged an English version quartino linee guida GSLC.

First semester 2011

In the first semester of 2011 (Feb. 11th) in Rome, the spring meeting of the CLWG has been held. The main aims were to update the guidelines of diagnosis and treatment of canine leishmaniasis in comparison to those published in 2007 and 2008, respectively. In addition, the half-day program within the mainframe of the International SCIVAC congress of Rimini has been discussed focusing on the several oral presentations to be accepted and reviewed. The criteria to award the best oral presentation for the “CLWG-Hill’s prize for the best contribution to the advancement of knowledge in leishmaniasis” have been assessed. Moreover, the resignation of Prof. Castagnaro has been accepted that were caused by institutional duties that did not allow to him to attend the activities of the CLWG.

Second semester July – December 2010

In the meeting held in Rome the last November 5th, the CLWG modified its organization, establishing two subgroups that replace the previous subgroups. The two current subgroups are so called and composed:

“Management and implementation of studies and protocols on canine leishmaniasis”, coordinated by Dr. Michele Maroli, to which all the CLWG members are affiliated,

“CLWG management and promotion” coordinated by Prof. George Lubas, which included Dr. Paola Badiale and Dr. Alberto Crotti.

Aims of the C.L.W.G. activity

The C.L.W.G. members meet every year during national S.C.I.V.A.C. congresses in May and October and their activities are coordinated by the S.I.N.U.V. (Italian Society of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology - Società Italiana di Nefrologia e Urologia Veterinaria) and by the S.I.M.I.V. (Italian Society of Veterinary Internal Medicine - Società Italiana di Medicina Interna Veterinaria).
