The scientific meeting of CLWG in the second semester 2017 has been held in Bari in November 11th at Majesty Hotel. The day after, November 12th an Interdisciplinary meeting on Canine Leishmaniosis has been organized by the FORMEV (Veterinary Continuing Education) company. The activity of this company is mainly devoted to increase the cultural and scientific grow in veterinary medicine of pet animals organizing classes, working days, seminars and other forms of continuing education. The event of November 12th has been highly successful and more than 150 practitioners have attended the meeting. The entire schedule and the speeches held are available in this web site.
In the scientific meetings of CLWG the following items have been discussed:
Update status of the study funded by CLWG “Efficacy of a Renal Diet and Enalapril in association or not with Eicosapentaenoic Acid (kcMEGA3, Pharmacross) in reducing proteinuria in leishmaniotic dogs affected by naturally occurring CKD (IRIS stages 1, 2 and 3)”– Zatelli refers that an important Italian firm in the pet nutrition with its specific diet for renal diseases will support the enrolled patients for the nutritional supply. The study will be carry out in Malta, and some cases will be enrolled even in the Bari area. A preliminary evaluation of few canine renal parameters (blood and urine) lasting one month about will be arranged to study the renal diet adopted.
New members in the CLWG – Dr. Nunzio D’Anna has confirmed his availability to take part as effective member of CLWG as ophthalmologist officially since the next meeting of February 9th 2018.
CLWG Subgroup “Investigations in renal disorders in canine leishmaniosis” – Zatelli, the leader of this group confirmed the acceptance of Dr. Cortadellas to be part of this subgroup, meanwhile more members are awaited to be included.
CLWG prospective paper “Comparative exam on the features of every topical product containing pyrethroid (spot-on and collar) occurring in the Italian market with preventive activity against leishmaniosis” – The information collected from package leaflet, EMA documentation and Italian Official Gazette Journal has been accurately reviewed looking for any oversight. They will be used in the preparation of the paper that will be ready to be submitted to the Veterinaria journal by the end of November 2017.
Analysis of the data resulting from “Questionnaire administered to the practitioners about their suggestions to the owners of the usage of topical and systemical products as preventive measure against canine leishmaniosis” – The data will be further evaluated and will be discussed in the next meetings of CLWG.
New topics to develop – The chance to review some of the CLWG papers carried out in the past years has been discussed. New topic will be immunotherapy and the vaccination including both Canileish and Letifend. In addition, the nutritional aspect and the nucleotides oral supplementation could be considered.
New sponsor of CLWG – starting from January 2018, once ended the sponsorship by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, the Ecuphar company is available to support the scientific activity of CLWG. It is well known that Ecuphar has in the products’ list an immunotherapeutic agent containing Domperidone (Leisguard®).
